Civic life includes initiatives with a focus on the development or improvement of buildings or public spaces.
British American Tobacco South Africa gives its employees an opportunity to participate in activities aimed at uplifting communities in which the company operates to give tangible meaning to its business principle of "mutual benefit". Its annual Community Outreach Weeks have included the building of houses in Kayamandi, a township just outside Stellenbosch in the Western Cape; the upgrading of community centres, police service stations and training centres.
Our first Community Outreach initiative was held at Khayamandi during which 450 of our employees interacted with the local community to paint, clean and plant gardens at the local community centre, library and police station. In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, more than 300 head office employees responded to a call and challenge in 2005 to help build a houses for three families from the disadvantaged community of Kayamandi in Stellenbosch, who had been living in makeshift accommodation. This initiative was particularly significant and special in that it was based on sustainability, meaningful employee participation and innovation.
The ‘Boundless Southern Africa’ expedition is a 120-day sustainable campaign aimed at uplifting communities adjacent to the Trans-frontier Conservation Areas in the nine countries within the Southern African Area. BAT South Africa has partnered with well-known explorer, Kingsley Holgate, through funding and by providing its employees with an opportunity to participate in the community outreach activities related to the expedition. The latter includes the distribution of mobile libraries, water purification straws, mosquitos nets in malaria hotspots, and spectacles for the visually impaired.
BAT South Africa is proud of its association with this extraordinary initiative and has particularly been warmed by the response received from our employees who have indicated that their involvement in the expedition has “changed their outlook on life."
